about

This album was born as a mediterranean folk-blues tribute to the melodic tradition of southern italian regions, from the peasant songs of Salento to the historical legacy of Neapolitan composers.
In A.D.O. family's Salento region, just like in Mississippi Roots-Blues, some traditional songs are not too precisely defined.
Recurring strophes are migrating from melody to melody ('arie'), mixed up by the singer's choices and moods.
Consequently, for the three Salento tunes you'll find here (tracks 2, 5, 8) it's impossible to point to a single 'original' version, as they are three new branches, created drawing from the magma of field recordings (some collected by Alan Lomax in the '50) and singing gatherings with friends.
On the other hand, the Neapolitan Song historical composer's works here included (track 4, 6, 7, 10) had a very precise form to begin with, so the defy was to try to do justice to such a monumental repertoire using the humble and essential means of the folksinger's voice & guitar, instead of the original orchestral or piano accompaniment.
The remaining two songs are from Italy's island regions, track 3 from Sicilia and track 9 from Sardegna, from the repertoire of two extraordinary traditional singers, Rosa Balistreri and Maria Teresa Cau, both emerging in the '60/'70 italian folk scene.
